New Belgium's New Sour Kriek
So this is pretty cool, New Belgium has just released the Transatlantique Kriek – a blended sour aged 100% in wood barrels. To get this intriguing brew they mixed their Foeder-aged Golden Sour with Authentic Kriek Lambic from Brewery Oud Beersel in Belgium, hence the transatlantic portion of the name. And this is the first year that the beer has been aged entirely in wood barrels as opposed to previous years when they used a variety of aging methods.
New Belgium was especially proud that they were able to showcase this beer at Toer de Geuze in Belgium which is THE event for sour beers. Thankfully you wont have to go all the way to Belgium to try this beauty though, they're doing the hard part and bringing it back here to the states for all of us to enjoy.
The Kriek portion of the beer is made over in Belgium and soured in oak barrels then matured with Polish cherries just to be shipped back here to the states to be mixed with another oak barrel aged golden sour. It may sound a little heavy on the sour pucker but the cherries and oak really smooth it out for a easy drink and refreshing aftertaste. Look for this 6.2% ABV kriek near you using their handy locator or on their app.
